Mould: a matter of public health
Two presenters spoke about mould, scientist Guy McSween of Institut Armand-Frappier, a specialist in the microbiological assessment of buildings, and Marie-Alix d’Halewyn of the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INRS).

Moulds and their reproductive cells are naturally present in outside air. They enter buildings through air movements and the comings and going of humans and animals. In order to develop and multiply, they require a certain humidity rate and temperature as well as natural nutriments such as the cellulose contained in wood. Unfortunately, all these conditions are sometimes present in our homes, and they are definitely always present in a marijuana grow house.

Identifying moulds and assessing a building’s rate of contamination is done through air and materials sampling. There are many types of moulds, from penicillium to the highly toxic stachybotrys. The symptoms they cause range from irritation of the eyes, throat and lungs to pneumonitis, and from allergic reactions, rhinitis (hay fever), asthma or allergic sinusitis to hypersensitive reactions and toxic reactions or mycotoxicosis. The Middle Ages disease called Saint Vitus Dance is an example of the latter. These reactions can be immediate or appear after repeated or prolonged exposure. Some can even cause death in frail or immune deficient patients
