A restaurant’s name can be just as important as its location or the quality of its food. So when I heard of a restaurant with the daring name of Moya Babushka Inoplanetyanka, (My Grandmother Is an Alien), I was intrigued.

Moya Babushka is located on quiet, tree-lined Shkolnaya Ulitsa, about a five-minute walk from the Rimskaya metro station.

Picture the room of an extremely wealthy, Star Wars-obsessed 9-year-old, and you start to imagine what the restaurant’s interior looks like. The dark gray walls, made from faux moon rock, are covered with strange glyphs illuminated in an eerie green glow. Pictures of spaceships and swirling nebulae are everywhere. Loud Russian pop makes it seem that much weirder.

The menu listed things like Meteorite Trails and Plato/Copernicus, followed by a description of each dish. I decided to order blindly and find out what sort of dishes hid behind all the unusual names upon receiving them.

The first dish to arrive was the Alpha Centauri (180 rubles), which turned out to be nothing more than our old friend, the Caesar salad. The salad had a bit too much dressing, but there was plenty of chicken and croutons, and the iceberg lettuce was fresh and crispy. Next was a dish called Chewbacca’s Dream. Apparently, Chewbacca dreams of julienne (90 rubles), that cheese, cream, and mushroom concoction. This one was oily and way too heavy on the cream.

The main course was the Miraduga (240 rubles), or in Earth-speak, a pork fillet in spinach cream sauce. The portion was smaller than I expected, but the pork was juicy and flavorful, and the sauce was aromatic, but not overbearing.

For dessert, I ordered the forest berry ice-cream cake (130 rubles) — whoever was making the menu apparently ran out of cosmic names by the time they got to desserts. This sponge cake, with layers of ice cream and a berry topping, must have spent a bit too long floating around in the chilly vacuum of space, as the berries were frozen together in a jelly-like paste and the ice cream contained bits of ice.

All things considered, if you’re an adult with a taste for weirdness, give Moya Babushka Inoplanetyanka a shot, but be warned: The food, although inexpensive, is often hit or miss.
