David Ortiz's 10th-inning homer gave the Boston Red Sox an 8-6 victory over the Anaheim Angels on Friday, completing a three-game sweep that sent them into the AL championship series.

The Red Sox have three days to sleep off their celebration while the hated New York Yankees play the Minnesota Twins for the right to meet Boston.

"We'll need a few days after tonight," said outfielder Johnny Damon, who proclaimed the team a band of "idiots" trying to rewrite the record book and ignore Boston's miserable baseball history. "It could have been different, but now we get to relax for a couple of days."

Damon got three hits, Ortiz had four and Boston rode starter Bronson Arroyo to a five-run lead after six innings. But Vladimir Guerrero hit a grand slam off Mike Timlin to tie it 6-6 in the seventh and send the game to extra innings.

Derek Lowe, who was bounced from the playoff rotation after a horrible stretch run, got out of a first-and-third jam in the top of the 10th and earned the win. Losing pitcher Francisco Rodriguez gave up Damon's leadoff single in the bottom half; two outs later, Angels manager Mike Scioscia brought in Game 1 starter Jarrod Washburn for the lefty-lefty matchup.

Ortiz hit the first pitch over the Green Monster to send the Fenway Park crowd - silenced by Guerrero's homer - into pandemonium. In the Boston clubhouse, with the lockers covered with plastic, a soaking of beer and champagne mixed with the smoke from victory cigars completed the frat house feel.

"There are a lot of guys in this clubhouse who thought, 'Hey, this might be an easier ride than we thought,"' outfielder Gabe Kapler said. "But we have a lot of guys who are comfortable biting their nails."

With the sweep - just the second in their post-season history - the Red Sox have three days off before starting the ALCS on the road Tuesday night. The Yankees and Twins were tied one game apiece as the series moved to Minneapolis for Game 3 on Friday night.

"We want to get to the World Series," Arroyo said. "Whichever way we have to."

I know..

i just like the way they played thuout the season, they have a hell of a roster, they kicked Yankee ass all season long.

I don't think Twins have enough firepower to overcome the Yanks - although they did shut them out the 1st game..

Houston has a pretty good shot over the Braves and I take St Louis over the Dodgers.

the Legend of the Curse
In 1918 the Red Sox won their 5th World Series, the most by any club at that time. One of the stars of the Boston championship franchise was a young pitcher by the name of George Herman Ruth, aka The Babe or The Bambino.

In 1920, however, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee needed money to finance his girlfriend's play, so he sold Babe Ruth's contract to Colonel Jacob Ruppert's New York Yankees for $100,000 (plus a loan collateralized by Fenway Park).

Since then, the Yankees, who had never won a World Championship before acquiring Ruth, have gone on to win 26, and are arguably one of the greatest success stories in the history of sport.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox have appeared in only four World Series since 1918, losing each one in game seven. Many consider Boston's performance after the departure of Babe Ruth to be attributable to "The Curse of the Bambino."

dude
Yanks twice lost to the Jays just recently...
it doesn't matter, a regular season loss don't mean much and we know the Yankees can win when it matters

They have fantastic batters: Matsui, Jeter, A-rod, Bernie Williams etc.. Posada on the home plate and Olerud (ex Jay) on 1st base are just amasing..

but I still think that BoSox has a tad better closing/ relieving pitching and their D is as good as u can buy.

All i wanna see is them down the Yanks.. or Twins, whoever..
